About the Bachelor of Science in Engineering - University Transfer

Professional engineers apply principles of science and mathematics to solve real-world problems and achieve practical goals through innovation. This field requires a creative mind, scientific knowledge and powerful problem-solving skills. As a career choice, it is broad, rewarding and applicable to every part of society.

This program is offered in partnership with the University of Alberta. The program is based on the first year of Engineering at the University of Alberta, and is designed to transfer in full to the U of A.

The first year of studies at RDP will provide you with fundamental skills in mathematics, computing and science. You will apply this learning to solve engineering problems in such courses as Engineering Statics, Dynamics and Design.

Work-integrated Learning

Work-integrated learning opportunities will depend on the area of focus you choose.  Learn more about the many types of experiential learning opportunities available at Red Deer Polytechnic through the Career Education and Experience Development Centre.

Further Study

The courses in this program can be transferred in full to University of Alberta; some classes taken in the first year are also transferable to University of Calgary, and other institutions outside of Alberta (if you decide to transfer out-of-province, you'll need to be in contact with the institution you plan to attend). You must decide on the transfer university when you enter the program. It is imperative that students who will apply to University of Alberta take the full first year in one academic year.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements for specific programs will often refer to Alberta Grade 12 course groups. Visit the Admission Requirements page for detailed group descriptions.

International Students: If you are an international student or have completed your high school education outside of Alberta, please refer to our International Course Equivalencies page for information on how your coursework may align with our admission requirements.

Eligibility for admission to the Engineering program at Red Deer Polytechnic requires applicants to meet minimum academic requirements. Qualified applicants who meet all minimum requirements will be offered admission on a first-come, first-served basis.

Academic Requirements

Students applying to Bachelor of Science in Engineering must have a minimum average of 65% with no mark below 60% in:

  • Math 30-1, or equivalent

  • Math 31, or equivalent

And no mark below 50% in:

  • Chemistry 30, or equivalent

  • ELA 30-1, or equivalent

  • Physics 30, or equivalent

Due to the high level of demand, the University of Alberta (U of A) gives priority to applicants who have no previous post-secondary university transfer credit prior to completing first-year engineering courses. If, for example, you have completed all or a portion of one year in another university transfer program (typically science) you will be assessed a GPA penalty for not having a full load of engineering courses making program transfer to the U of A difficult. Please contact Advising for further information or contact the U of A directly.

Additional Requirements

English Language Proficiency

Applicants who declare English as first language are exempt from ELP requirements. Applicants whose first language is not English must demonstrate English Language Proficiency (ELP) for admission to credit programs by providing official documentation to the Office of the Registrar at international.admissions@rdpolytech.ca or by regular mail, after an online application has been submitted. All ELP tests must have been obtained within two years of the date their program starts. ELP requirements are in addition to the other admission requirements noted above.
