Biography

Hasina Juma is the chair of the Research Common which is a central hub where faculty, staff and students come together for assistance and guidance in research and scholarly activity.

Early in Hasina’s university education, she was fascinated by how values in the workplace are influenced by culture. It’s the reason why she pursued a Masters in International Communication, a double degree program founded by Dr. Geert Hofstede – pioneer of intercultural management with intersection to organizational behavior. Hasina furthered her knowledge while completing a thesis (distinction) on the relevancy of intercultural competency within the public relations field in Europe.

Hasina combines her 20 years of professional experience in five countries in the non-profit, consultancy, post-secondary education and government sectors through various roles. She brings a strong background in international and intercultural communication; applied and traditional research; capacity building; and change management.

Her intersectional personal lived experience combined with professional experience in equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI) roles provides a foundation to help RDP apply the new EDI requirements being implemented across research fields. Her approach is to be a bridge builder between groups successfully driving them forward towards common goals.

Examples of recent research contributions include presentations at the Leeds Beckett University PhD Conference, articles in the Journal of Communication Management, Studies in Media and Communication and European Communication Director.

Hasina has also received the highest honour from Indigenous leaders and commendation awards from the Government of Alberta.
