Current Specialized OHS Programs and Exposure Control Plans

Red Deer Polytechnic is pleased to provide you information about the following Occupational Health and Safety programs, and various Exposure Control Plans. These programs and plans help to ensure the safety and health of our students, instructors, staff and other members of the Polytechnic community.

  • Pandemic Plan 2020 - provides information about how the Polytechnic is currently responding to the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as informing how our institution would generally respond in the event of any future pandemics. 

  • Office Ergonomic ProgramAn ergonomics program is a systematic approach and a management system that is designed to reduce risk of injury and illness from ergonomic hazards in the workplace. 

    The Alberta OHS Code Part 14 Lifting and Handling Loads requires employers to assess ergonomic hazards relating to lifting and handling loads. The legislation also requires employers to investigate whenever workers report symptoms of a musculoskeletal injury that they believe to be work related. 
    Setting up your office environment so it’s comfortable and efficient for you is important for preventing musculoskeletal injuries (MSIs) such as sprains and strains. Your chair, keyboard, mouse, and monitor are all pieces of office equipment that can have a big impact on your body position.  If any of these are not properly adjusted, you could be at risk of injury. The Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety offers a short FREE Office Ergonomic Course.

    • Sit to Stand Workstations - For employees to obtain a sit to stand workstation for medical reasons an ergonomic assessment must be completed. Call 403.342.3427 or email health [dot] safety [at] rdc [dot] ab [dot] ca (health[dot]safety[at]rdc[dot]ab[dot]ca) to book an appointment.

  • Respect Program - This interactive, online program will help build an even stronger campus culture where everyone feels valued, and is free from workplace Bullying, Abuse, Harassment, and Discrimination. It provides organizations with a standard tool, common language and practices, while improving team communication and productivity. This program aligns with the Polytechnic's values and also meets Red Deer Polytechnic’s obligation under the Alberta OHS Code Part 27 Violence and Harassment legislation to ensure all employees receive training related to violence and harassment. Over one million Canadians are Respect certified.  The curriculum for the program has been approved by the Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC), and as purveyor of the National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, the MHCC promotes Respect in the Workplace across Canada. In an easy to follow curriculum, the 90-minute program can be completed all at once, or over several increments. The program can be accessed at: RDP Respect Program.

  • Biosafety - Our Biosafety Program is in place to meet the legislated requirements of the Alberta OHS Code Part 4 Chemical Hazards, Biological Hazards and Harmful Substances which ensures the safe acquisition, use, storage, transportation and disposal of biological and biohazardous material(s). This program outlines the administrative and operational oversite for individuals working with biological and/or biohazardous materials that must meet all legislative requirements as set forth in the Polytechnic's Biosafety Code of Practice and supporting documentation.
