Testing Overview

Certification testing for Welders is available on campus at Red Deer Polytechnic or on-location at your welding site. RDP offers both CWB testing and B Pressure re-testing services.

Testing Options

CWB Testing

Red Deer Polytechnic is a Certified Canadian Welding Bureau (CWB) testing facility. If you are a welder but are not employed by a company certified to CSA W47.1, and not a member of a union providing testing facilities, you can make arrangements for testing at RDP. Upon successfully completing the test, you will be given a letter by the Canadian Welding Bureau representative certifying CSA W47.1 standards.

  • Testing Schedule: Every second Wednesday
  • Time: Welder check-in is at 7:45 am, testing begins at 8:00 am
  • Cost: $155+GST per plate
  • Location: RDP Main Campus, room 824N

Note: CWB employee(s) (testers), the welding student(s), and interpreter(s) must come prepared with CSA-approved safety boots, safety glasses, and welding gloves. Individuals will not be permitted in the shop until meeting this safety requirement.

 

B Pressure Renewal

RDP also conducts performance qualification testing of pressure welders, pressure tack welders and machine welding operators - ABSA Reg No: AOQP-7114. Performance qualification testing to a company-specific WPS is also available. 

Note: We do not offer the initial B Pressure testing, please contact ABSA directly.

  • Testing Schedule: Every second Monday  
  • Time: Welder check-in is at 3:30 pm, testing begins at 3:45 pm
  • Cost: Varies by test – cost will be confirmed when you arrive for your test
  • Location: RDP Main Campus, room 824N

 

*NEW* B Pressure Preparation Course

First Class Journeyperson to "B" Pressure for Welders

Upgrade your Journeyperson ticket with "B" Pressure Certification. This 44-hour course will help you prepare for the exam and will include simulation of initial “B” pressure welding on a 6” SCH.80 pipe. 

5 weeks of sessions:

  • Week 1 - Tue/Wed 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
  • Week 2 - Tue/Wed 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
  • Week 3 - Tue/Wed 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
  • Week 4 - Tue/Wed 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
  • Week 5 - Tue/Wed/Thurs 6:00 PM - 10:00 PM
    • Optional Friday ABSA Initial B Pressure Test

Book a Test

There are a maximum number of welders permitted for each test offering. Please follow these steps to book your test.

If you are an individual booking a test for yourself:

  1. Call the School of Trades and Technology at 403.342.3100. to schedule yourself on an available date. Be prepared to give your full name, email address, and information on what test will be completed.
  2. Before arriving on your scheduled test date, create a learner profile on the registration website (this is required for payment of your test)

If you are a company booking a test for one or more welders:

  1. Call the School of Trades and Technology at 403.342.3100. to schedule the welder(s) on an available date. Be prepared to give the welders' full name, email address, and information on what test will be completed.
  2. If the welders have tested at RDP within the last 2 years, login to your company account on the website and register the welders in the appropriate tests
  3. If your company has not tested at RDP within the last 2 years, ce [at] rdc [dot] ab [dot] ca (subject: Company%20Profile%20Request) (request a company profile). You will be provided instructions on enrolling welders in tests and providing payment on behalf of your company.
