Pre-Employment Carpentry
Gain knowledge, skills and values for successful entry into a career as a carpenter. Build and repair a vast array of structures using hand and power tools. Get a feel for different materials including wood, concrete, steel, and glass.
This program covers all the course materials received by a first-year apprentice, plus additional hands-on skills, safety training, and employability skills. After completion of this program, you will have knowledge and skills to challenge the first period carpentry technical training and practical exam.
Employability
Carpenters may work for a construction company, a general contractor, maintenance companies or be self-employed. Employers are currently looking for apprenticeship candidates who have demonstrated an interest and sill in the carpentry trade and seek job readiness that graduates of this program possess.

There are no prior learning or approved equivalencies for this course.
- It is recommended that students meet the current minimum entrance requirements for the Carpentry apprenticeship program as per Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training, including passing marks in:
- Mathematics 10-3
- English 10-2; or
A passing grade in all five Canadian General Educational Development (GED) tests
Program Details:
Learners in this program complete the same curriculum as a first-year apprentice, two safety tickets, and learn to build a trades resume. This course encompasses an average of 30 hours of direct instruction per week with an additional 6 to 10 hours of homework per week.
Throughout this program, learners will learn to understand industry terminology and basic skills in woodworking and carpentry. The safe use of hand and power tools, concrete forming, floor framing, blueprint reading, shop drawing, applied mathematics, and safety are also areas covered in this program. Learning is further enhanced with class visits, industry speakers, and site visits.
Upon successfully completing first-year technical training (65% overall grade and attendance of 90%), learners are eligible to attempt the First Year Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training provincial exam, written and practical. A grade of 70% is required to successfully pass the provincial exam.
